About Choose Wisely &
Choosing Wisely International

Choosing Wisely International (CWI) is the global home for Choosing Wisely and seeks to create a scalable and sustainable clinician-led movement that focuses on change at the frontlines, can be universally applied in different care settings, continuously strives for clinical excellence, and reduces unnecessary and harmful care through resource stewardship.

Origins & Background

Originally launched by the US-based ABIM Foundation in 2012, Choosing Wisely is a movement intended to reduce unnecessary care and drive both quality and safety. Its philosophies and principles date back to 2002 with the development of a ‘Physicians Charter’ focused on principles of professionalism and ethical conduct, patient welfare, patient autonomy, and social justice. Since its inception, Choosing Wisely has galvanized clinical leaders around the world, inspiring them to organize independent Choosing Wisely ‘chapters’ in their own countries. Choosing Wisely is now regarded as a global leader in reducing unnecessary and harmful care and has developed practical tools, fostered international collaboration, and earned widespread recognition from leading organisations and journals.

FAQs

These are tests and treatments where strong scientific evidence demonstrates they are not helpful to patients in particular circumstances or may unnecessarily expose patients to harm.

Choosing Wisely campaigns work with national clinician societies to conduct an independent review of tests and treatments commonly used in their particular specialty where there is scientific evidence of overuse or harm. Each country's campaign specifies the process by which these societies develop their recommendations, but not the content of the recommendations themselves — ensuring that recommendations reflect local best practices and are clinician-led.
